During the discussions about the idea of ‘the Year of Jan Gehl’, even in December 2013, Dagmara Kociuba (PhD, Department of Land Policy and Planning) propsed to organize after Christmas a presentation for students about the ideas and design philosophy of Gehl Architects as a part of the series of debates ‘Spatial economy in theory and practise’ at the Department of Earth Sciences and Spatial Economy at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University….In the meantime, we’ve managed to obtain an official permission of Professor Gehl to annoumce a year of his name and thus the appointed meeting with the students became the official opening event for the ‘Year of Jan Gehl’ in Lublin.

The meeting was attended by about 50 people, including:

- Michał Przepiórka – Cycling Officer of Lublin City Office
- Professor Bogusław Szmygin – Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Technical University of Lublin, President of ICOMOS
